For landlords

Who collects the money?

We do. Every tenant pays on one M-PESA Paybill, 4183611. We keep a 10% fee, send the other 90% to pay for your main meter, and report every shilling to you.

No more reading the main meter, dividing the bill and chasing each tenant for their share. Each house has its own meter, and a tenant pays before they use power.

Read what the video says

Who collects the money from your Tari sub-meters and what exactly is the 10% administration fee.

Let's walk through it step by step.

First, power. Electricity flows from KPLC into the main meter, also called the mother meter.

From there it feeds each Tari sub-meter, one for every tenant.

Now how is power consumed?

Say the KPLC main meter holds 100 kWh of tokens and each sub-meter holds 50 kWh bought by its tenant.

Every sub-meter draws its power from the main meter.

So when tenants use electricity, their sub-meters deplete and the main meter depletes as well.

Here the three tenants use 30, 20 and 10 kWh.

The main meter drops from 100 to 40.

If the main meter is postpaid, the same usage simply builds up on the KPLC bill.

And to keep everything running, the collections from the sub-meters feed the main meter again.

Next, tenants buy tokens.

Say three tenants each buy 100 shillings worth of tokens using M-PESA Paybill 4183611.

Every payment instantly generates a 20-digit token sent to that tenant's sub-meter.

All payments are collected in one place, the Tari Paybill.

100 plus 100 plus 100 makes 300 shillings collected.

Now the reconciliation.

From the 300 shillings, Tari deducts a 10% administration fee.

10% of 300 is 30 shillings.

The remaining 270 shillings is reconciled, reported to the property owner and remitted.

Here is the full picture.

Power flows from the KPLC main meter to the Tari sub-meters to each tenant.

Money flows the other way.

Tenants buy tokens.

The Tari Paybill collects and reconciles.

After the 10% fee, 270 shillings is remitted against the KPLC main meter to feed it or pay the KPLC bill.

So who pays for the main meter?

Tari does, using the money collected from the sub-meters.

Tenants buy tokens and use power from their sub-meters.

Tari collects the payments, deducts the 10% administration fee and buys KPLC tokens for the main meter.

The main meter feeds the sub-meters again, and the cycle continues.

The landlord is never charged a single shilling.

So what does the 10% administration fee cover?

Customer support whenever you need help.

Transactional charges, including the M-PESA fee for buying the main meter's KPLC tokens.

And billing system maintenance and support.

So tokens, reconciliation and reports always work.

The full flow

Power goes down. Money comes back up.

Electricity comes from KPLC into the main meter, the mother meter in the owner's name. From there it feeds one Tari sub-meter for every tenant. When tenants use power, their sub-meters go down, and so does the main meter.

Money moves the other way. Tenants buy tokens by M-PESA. Every payment lands on the Tari Paybill, where we reconcile it, take our fee and send the rest back to the main meter.

How power and money move in a Tari building Power flows from KPLC to the main meter, to three sub-meters, to the tenants. Tenants pay by M-PESA on Paybill 4183611. An example

Three tenants buy KES 100 each.

Every payment makes a 20-digit token that goes to that tenant's sub-meter. All three payments land in one place, the Tari Paybill.

From the total we take our 10% fee. The rest is reconciled, reported to you, the owner, and sent to the main meter.

This is the example used in our video. Real amounts are whatever your tenants choose to buy.

The main meter

Who pays for the main meter? We do, from what tenants pay.

You buy the sub-meters once. After that, the main meter is paid from the money your tenants spend on tokens. It works whether your KPLC main meter is prepaid or postpaid.

Prepaid main meter

We buy the KPLC tokens

After our fee, we use the money collected to buy KPLC tokens for the main meter. The main meter feeds the sub-meters again, and the cycle goes on.

Postpaid main meter

We pay towards the KPLC bill

The power your tenants use builds up on the KPLC bill as usual. The money collected is sent against that bill, so it is covered by the people who used the power.
